Choose a route shape that gives you options
The three most useful formats are a loop, an out-and-back, and a point-to-point ride. Each handles bailouts differently.
Loop: varied, but less forgiving
A loop gives you new scenery and avoids repeating the same road. It can also place you far from your starting point with no simple way to shorten the ride. If the loop has a long rural section, a mechanical problem there may require a long wait for a ride.
For a first 50-mile attempt, look for a loop with natural escape points. These might include towns, major intersections, rail stations, trail access points, or roads where a support vehicle can safely meet you. A loop built around one remote section is less resilient than a loop that passes through several reachable communities.
You can also divide the loop into segments. For example, a 50-mile route might contain a 15-mile first section, a 10-mile return toward services, a 15-mile middle section, and a final 10 miles back to the start. The exact distances don’t matter as much as knowing where the route becomes difficult to abandon.
Out-and-back: the simplest bailout model
An out-and-back is often the easiest choice for a first long ride. You already know that every mile away from home eventually becomes a mile back toward it, and you can turn around at a planned point.
The trade-off is that reaching 50 miles requires riding 25 miles away before returning. If you’re tired at the turnaround, you still have the full distance back. That makes the turnaround a useful decision point, not a target you must reach at all costs.
An out-and-back works especially well when the route follows a corridor with regular services or parallel roads. You might be able to shorten the ride by turning around early, stopping at a nearby station, or arranging pickup from a town along the way.
Point-to-point: attractive, but transport-dependent
A point-to-point ride can make 50 miles feel more interesting because the scenery keeps changing and the route doesn’t require you to retrace your path. It also creates the most logistical work.
You’ll need a dependable way to get home from the destination, plus a backup if your original transport fails. A train may not accept a bicycle at every time or station. A friend may be unavailable after several hours. A rideshare vehicle may not have room for a bike, and local rules or company policies can change.
Treat the return journey as part of the route plan. If you can’t explain exactly how you’ll get home with a functioning bike, a broken bike, or an exhausted rider, the ride isn’t fully planned yet.
Confirm your return options: Check the current bicycle rules, schedules, reservation requirements, service alerts, and station access for any train, bus, ferry, or shuttle you may use. Save the relevant information offline, and identify a second way home before you start riding.
Set a realistic turnaround point
A 50-mile ride doesn’t have to be the first time you cover 50 miles in one continuous attempt. You can make the day more manageable by setting a primary goal and several earlier decision points.
A useful plan might include:
- Early check-in: After 10 miles, assess whether your pace, comfort, and energy match expectations.
- Supply point: Around 15 to 20 miles, refill water and eat before you feel depleted.

Build in a time limit as well. A route that works in daylight may become much less comfortable if you’re still several miles from home near sunset. Include time for stops, navigation, repairs, and delays rather than calculating only your moving speed.
Map water and food access before you ride
For a long recreational ride, supply planning should be based on the route, weather, intensity, and your personal needs. Don’t assume a map listing, park fountain, or small store will be open or working when you arrive.
Mark every realistic water source before the ride, then decide which ones are dependable enough to use. Public fountains can be seasonal or closed. Convenience stores may be located on a busy road that’s difficult to enter safely by bicycle. A café may not have an appropriate place to stop with your bike.
Carry enough water to reach the next reliable source, with some margin for delays. In hot or humid conditions, that margin matters more. You should also know where you can buy simple food such as sandwiches, fruit, baked goods, or packaged snacks. Food access is a bailout option in its own right: a short stop can prevent a low-energy ride from becoming a dangerous one.
Pack at least one food item that doesn’t depend on a store. Choose something you’ll actually eat and that tolerates being carried on the bike. Test your food and drink setup on shorter rides so you’re not discovering on mile 35 that a container leaks or a snack is difficult to open.
Build mechanical bailouts around the likely failures
The maintenance angle matters because a first 50-mile ride puts more time and distance between you and home. A clean, well-adjusted bike reduces risk, but it doesn’t eliminate punctures, loose parts, chain problems, or damage from road debris.
Before the ride, check:
- Tire condition, pressure, and visible cuts
- Brake pad wear and lever feel
- Chain lubrication and shifting
- Wheels for loose spokes or unusual movement
- Bolts on the stem, seatpost, bottle cages, and racks
- Battery levels for electronic shifting, lights, and navigation devices
- The condition of your spare tube, tire levers, pump, or inflator
Don’t install unfamiliar equipment the night before. A new saddle bag, tire, computer mount, or tool can create a problem that would have been easy to find earlier.
Carry tools that match the bike and the failures you can reasonably repair. At minimum, that usually means a spare tube even if you use tubeless tires, tire levers, a pump, and a multi-tool with the appropriate hex bits. Decide how a disabled bike gets home
A flat tire and a broken derailleur aren't the same problem. Your plan should distinguish between a repair you can complete beside the road and a failure that requires transport.
For a repairable problem, identify bike shops along or near the route. Check their location, opening hours, and whether the route to the shop is safely rideable. A shop several miles away may not help if the bike can’t be ridden or if the road has no shoulder.
For an unrideable bike, consider three options:
- Personal pickup: Agree in advance on who could collect you and where a vehicle can safely stop.
- Transport service: Confirm whether your roadside assistance, cycling membership, insurance, or vehicle plan covers bicycles and under what conditions.

Keep your phone charged, carry identification and a payment method, and save your emergency contacts. A small power bank can be more useful than another navigation feature when the ride takes longer than planned.
