A Simple Test for Whether Your Weekly Training Is Actually Progressing
Training progress is easier to recognize when repeatable efforts, recovery, and perceived exertion are viewed together rather than reduced to speed or distance. I’ll show you a simple weekly test that reveals whether your cycling is becoming more durable and reliable.
You can ride the same routes every week and still be unsure whether your training is working. Speed changes with wind, traffic, temperature, tire pressure, and fatigue, while distance alone says little about how well you handled the effort.
A more dependable approach is to repeat a small, controlled effort and record three things: how the effort felt, how consistently you completed it, and how well you recovered afterward. Together, these measures give you a useful progress check without turning every ride into a test.
The simple weekly progress test
Choose one repeatable section of road, trail, or indoor-trainer workout that takes roughly 8 to 20 minutes. It should be long enough to require sustained effort but short enough to repeat under similar conditions.
Your test should have these characteristics:
- A relatively steady gradient or surface
- Few interruptions from traffic or intersections
- A start and finish you can identify easily
- A duration you can complete without sprinting
- A place or workout you can use regularly
An indoor trainer can make this easier because resistance, temperature, and interruptions are more controlled. Outdoors, you don’t need perfect conditions. You just need to record conditions that could affect the result.
Ride the effort at a controlled, challenging pace—not an all-out effort. Aim for about 7 out of 10 on a perceived-exertion scale, where 1 is very easy and 10 is maximal. You should be working hard enough that conversation is limited, but you shouldn’t be sprinting for the finish.
Afterward, note:
- Elapsed time or average speed, if available
- Your perceived exertion from 1 to 10
- Whether your effort stayed steady
- How you felt later that day and the next morning
- Any relevant conditions, such as wind, heat, poor sleep, or unusual fatigue
The test isn’t a contest against your previous best. It’s a comparison of similar efforts completed with similar control.
Why speed alone is a poor progress measure
Suppose you complete the same 10-minute climb three times:
- Week one: 10 minutes at an effort of 8 out of 10
- Week two: 9 minutes 45 seconds at an effort of 8 out of 10
- Week three: 10 minutes at an effort of 7 out of 10
The third result may represent better progress than the second. You covered the section in the same time while using less effort. You may also have finished with more control and recovered more quickly.
Speed is still useful, but it needs context. A tailwind can make a ride look faster, while a headwind can hide improvement. A heavier layer of clothing, lower tire pressure, or a warmer day can also change your speed without changing your fitness.
Instead of asking only, “Was I faster?” ask:
- Did I complete the effort more smoothly?
- Did I hold the pace without fading badly?
- Did the same pace feel easier?
- Did I recover more quickly afterward?
- Could I have continued for another few minutes if needed?
These questions are especially helpful for recreational cyclists, because useful progress often appears first as better control and repeatability rather than a dramatic increase in speed.
Use the three-part progress check
1. Repeatable performance
Your first measure is what you actually did. That could be time, distance completed in a set period, average heart rate, power, or simply whether you held a steady pace.
You don’t need advanced equipment. A stopwatch and a familiar route are enough. If you use a cycling computer, avoid collecting more data than you’ll use. One consistent measure is better than a screen full of numbers you rarely review.
Look for trends over several attempts rather than reacting to one ride. A single slow effort may reflect poor sleep or strong wind. A single fast effort may have benefited from unusually favorable conditions.
2. Recovery afterward
Your second measure is how your body responds after the test. Notice your breathing, legs, energy, and willingness to continue with an easy ride.
A controlled effort should create fatigue, but it shouldn’t routinely leave you exhausted for the rest of the day or noticeably worse the following morning. If you’re recovering well, you may be able to complete the same test again later in the week without carrying excessive fatigue into it.
Recovery is part of training progress because cycling fitness isn’t just the ability to produce effort. It also includes your ability to absorb that effort and return to normal activity.
3. Perceived exertion
Your effort rating helps explain the other two measures. A 10-minute effort completed in 10 minutes at 7 out of 10 is different from the same effort completed in 10 minutes at 9 out of 10.
Use simple descriptions to make your ratings more consistent:
- 4 to 5: Comfortable but purposeful; you could speak in full sentences
- 6: Moderate and steady; conversation takes some concentration
- 7: Challenging but controlled; you can say short phrases
- 8: Hard; you’re focused on maintaining the effort
- 9 to 10: Very hard to maximal; not appropriate for every weekly check
Your scale doesn’t need to match anyone else’s. The value comes from using your own scale consistently.
Keep the test small enough to repeat
A common mistake is making the weekly test too demanding. If you turn it into a maximum-effort time trial, you may need several days to recover. That makes it harder to distinguish improvement from accumulated fatigue.
A better test fits into your normal training. For example:
- Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes
- Complete one controlled 10-minute effort
- Ride easily for 5 to 10 minutes
- Continue with an easy or moderate ride if you feel normal
You can also use two shorter efforts, such as two 8-minute intervals with several minutes of easy riding between them. In that case, compare whether the second effort is close to the first. A large drop-off may indicate that the first effort was too hard or that you’re carrying fatigue.
The exact format matters less than consistency. Changing the route, duration, and intensity every week creates too many variables to interpret.
Record the minimum useful information
A simple note might look like this:
Test: 10-minute road segment
Time: 10:12
Effort: 7/10
Pacing: Steady, slight fade near the end
Recovery: Felt normal the next morning
Conditions: Light wind, cool temperature
You can keep this in a phone note, training app, or paper notebook. Add body weight, heart rate, or power only if those measurements are reliable and useful to you.
Check your comparison conditions: Before interpreting a result, note wind, temperature, traffic, tire pressure, route changes, and unusual fatigue. These details can explain a slower time without indicating lost fitness.
Review your notes every three or four weeks. Look for a pattern such as faster completion at the same effort, the same completion time at a lower effort, or less fatigue after comparable work.
Know when the result isn't a training result
Not every change reflects fitness. A difficult workweek, poor sleep, inadequate food, illness, or a mechanical problem can affect your performance. A loose brake, rubbing derailleur, underinflated tire, or drivetrain issue can make a familiar effort feel harder than it should.
If the effort suddenly feels much harder and the equipment or conditions have changed, investigate those factors before changing your training plan. Likewise, don’t treat persistent pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath, or symptoms that concern you as ordinary training fatigue. Stop the effort and seek appropriate medical advice.
Your test is most useful when it helps you make sensible decisions. A disappointing result may mean you need recovery, not more intensity. A strong result may mean you can progress gradually, not that every ride should become harder.
What counts as real progress?
After several weeks, progress may look like any of these combinations:
- Faster time at the same perceived effort
- The same time at a lower perceived effort
- A smaller performance drop between repeated efforts
- Better control near the end of the effort
- Normal energy returning sooner after the ride
- More consistent results across ordinary conditions
You don’t need every measure to improve at once. Fitness develops unevenly. Your speed may stay level while your recovery improves, or your effort rating may fall before your time changes.
The long-term goal is a more dependable rider: someone who can judge effort, complete planned work, recover from it, and repeat the process week after week.

Choose one familiar effort and write down its start and finish points. Complete it at a controlled 7 out of 10 effort, then record the time, pacing, recovery, and conditions.
Repeat the test every one to three weeks rather than forcing it into every ride. Compare groups of results, not isolated numbers. If performance is stable but the effort feels easier or recovery improves, count that as progress.
