When Should You Skip a Ride Because of Smoke, Heat, or Storms?

Smoke: skip hard outdoor exercise when the air is poor

Heat: judge the workload and your ability to cool down

Storms and lightning: don’t negotiate with an exposed sky
Lightning is a straightforward reason to postpone an outdoor ride. You may be able to avoid heavy rain, but you can’t make open roads, fields, hilltops, or trails safe during an active thunderstorm.
If thunder is audible, treat lightning as a present hazard and get into a substantial enclosed building or a fully enclosed hard-topped vehicle. A bicycle shelter, picnic pavilion, tent, or open-sided structure isn’t an equivalent refuge. If a storm is approaching, don’t wait until rain begins; return early or change course toward a reliable shelter.
After the last thunder, wait for the period recommended by your local weather authority before resuming outdoor activity. The familiar 30-minute rule is widely used in North America, but current local guidance should take priority. If the storm system is persistent, the most efficient choice is often to end the ride rather than repeatedly leave and seek shelter.
Heavy rain also changes riding risk even without lightning. Wet braking surfaces, reduced visibility, standing water, debris, and drivers with limited visibility can make a route unsuitable. Skip it when flooding is possible or when you can’t maintain safe control and visibility.
Verify the storm has actually passed: Check live lightning information, radar, and local warnings before leaving shelter. Follow the applicable waiting period after the last thunder, and don’t rely on a blue patch of sky directly overhead.
Wind: consider control, not just speed
Wind rarely has one universal cutoff because the same gust feels different on a light bike, a deep-rim wheelset, a loaded bike, or a sheltered route. Crosswinds are usually more disruptive than a steady headwind, especially near bridges, open fields, coastlines, gaps in tree cover, and large vehicles.
Look at both sustained wind and gusts. A route may be manageable in one direction and exhausting or unstable on the return. Strong gusts can move a rider into traffic, make steering difficult, or turn a harmless-looking descent into a poor decision.
Postpone when the forecast includes wind warnings, severe gusts, blowing debris, falling branches, or conditions that exceed your ability to control the bike. Also consider whether you can ride without being forced into an unsafe road position. If you’re unsure, choose a sheltered route, reduce speed, avoid aero equipment you don’t need, and keep both hands ready for sudden movement.
Combine hazards instead of averaging them
Two moderate problems can produce a high-risk ride. Heat plus smoke increases breathing and cooling demands. Wind plus heat makes a return leg harder. A storm after a hot day may leave roads slick while you’re already tired. Smoke, high temperatures, and poor route access together leave very little margin for a mechanical problem.
