How to Replace a Tubeless Road Tire Without Making a Mess

This process works for replacing a worn tire, repairing damage that sealant can’t handle, or changing to a different tubeless-compatible model. It assumes the wheel, tire, rim tape, and valve are designed to work together.
Prepare the work area and tools
Work somewhere with a stable surface and enough room to lay the wheel flat. A workstand can be useful, but you’ll still want a tray, towel, or piece of cardboard beneath the wheel to catch drips.
Gather:
- Tire levers approved for tubeless rims
- A clean rag or shop towels
- A small container for old sealant
- A valve-core tool
- Fresh tubeless sealant
- An air compressor, tubeless inflator, or high-volume floor pump
- Mild soapy water in a spray bottle
- A tire plug tool or small pick for removing debris, if needed
- The tire manufacturer’s recommended rim and pressure information
Avoid using metal tire levers. They can scratch the rim, damage rim tape, or nick the tire bead. Keep a separate rag for sealant; it can spread farther than expected and may permanently mark some fabrics or surfaces.
Check your tire and rim pairing: Before fitting the replacement, confirm that the tire is tubeless-ready and suitable for your rim’s internal dimensions. Also check the manufacturer’s current pressure limits and compatibility guidance rather than assuming the new tire matches the old one.
Remove as much sealant as possible
Take the wheel off the bicycle and position it so the valve sits at the lowest point. This allows a portion of the sealant to collect away from the bead you’ll begin removing.
Remove the valve cap, then rotate the valve so it sits near the top of the wheel. Use the valve-core tool to loosen and remove the core slowly. Keep a finger or towel over the opening in case sealant is still under pressure.
With the valve open, turn the wheel and drain the sealant into your container. You may need to rock the wheel gently to move liquid toward the valve. Don’t spin it aggressively; that only distributes sealant around the inside of the tire.
Some sealant will remain inside the tire. That’s normal. The goal isn’t to make the casing perfectly dry before removal. It’s to reduce the amount that can spill when the bead comes away from the rim.
If the sealant has dried into rubbery strings or flakes, pull out the loose pieces with your fingers or a rag. Don’t scrape the rim tape with a sharp tool.
Break the bead carefully
Deflate the tire completely if you haven’t already. Press the sidewalls inward with your hands, working around the wheel until the bead drops into the rim’s center channel. This step matters because the channel provides the slack needed to remove a tight tubeless tire.
Start opposite the valve. Push both beads toward the center channel in that area, then work a short section of one bead over the rim edge with your hands. If it won’t move, use a tire lever gently.
Once one section is outside the rim, continue around the wheel. Keep the remaining bead in the center channel. If the bead climbs back onto the rim’s shoulder, you’ll lose the slack you just created and the tire will feel unnecessarily difficult to remove.
When the first bead is off, tip the wheel slightly over your container and let any trapped sealant drain. Remove the second bead in the same way. You may be able to pull it off by hand, especially after the first bead is removed.
Avoid levering against the valve area. The valve and rim tape are vulnerable there, and the bead is often tightest because the tire has settled around the rim.
Inspect the tire, rim, and rim tape
Before fitting the replacement, inspect the parts that will remain in service. A new tire won’t solve a damaged rim strip or a sharp object still lodged in the casing.
Check the old tire
Run a cloth slowly around the inside of the old tire. Look for glass, wire, thorns, or small pieces of metal that may have caused the original problem. Don’t rely only on a visual check; debris can hide in a puncture channel.
If you’re replacing the tire because of a cut, examine how wide and deep the damage is. A casing cut that exposes threads or has a damaged bead is a reason not to reuse that tire as a tubeless tire.
Check the rim and tape
Wipe the rim bed clean and inspect it under good light. Look for dents, sharp edges, cracks, or anything that could prevent the tire from seating evenly.
Pay particular attention to the rim tape. It should be smooth, firmly attached, and fully covering the spoke holes. Bubbles, lifted edges, wrinkles, or cuts can cause persistent air loss. If the tape is compromised, replace it before fitting the new tire rather than trying to seal around the problem.
Check the tubeless valve too. The rubber base should sit flat against the rim tape, and the retaining nut should be snug without being aggressively tightened. Over-tightening can deform the valve seal or damage the tape.
Fit the replacement tire cleanly
Confirm the tire’s direction of rotation, if it has one, and install one bead fully into the rim. Place the tire label near the valve if you want a convenient reference point for future inspections.
Add the second bead starting near the valve and finishing opposite it. Keep both sides of the tire down in the rim’s center channel as you work. The final section is usually the tightest, so avoid placing it directly over the valve until the end if that gives you more room.
If you need a lever for the final section, use one carefully and make sure it isn’t trapping the rim tape. Never force a lever underneath a bead while the opposite side is sitting on the rim shoulder; that setup creates unnecessary tension and increases the chance of damage.
Before adding sealant, inspect both bead lines. They should sit inside the rim, with no section folded, twisted, or pinched.
Add sealant without coating everything
There are two common methods: adding sealant through the valve or pouring it into the tire before closing the final section of bead. For a clean replacement, adding it through the valve is usually easier to control.
Leave the valve core removed and rotate the wheel so the valve is at roughly the four- or eight-o’clock position. This helps the sealant flow into the tire instead of pooling directly at the valve opening. Measure the amount recommended for your tire size and sealant product, then pour it slowly through the valve stem.
Reinstall the valve core and tighten it with the valve-core tool. It needs to seal, but excessive force can damage the small component.
If the tire manufacturer or sealant instructions specify a different method, follow those instructions. Sealant formulas and recommended quantities vary, and more isn't always better. Excess liquid adds weight and can make future removal messier.
Seat the bead with controlled airflow
Spray a light film of soapy water around both bead edges. This can help the rubber slide into position and makes leaks easier to identify. Don’t soak the rim or flood the tire.
Remove the valve core again if your inflation setup benefits from unrestricted airflow. Connect the inflator securely, then deliver a short, controlled burst of air. Watch both sides of the tire as the bead moves outward toward the rim shoulders.
A properly seating bead often makes several audible pops. Keep your hands, face, and loose clothing away from the bead area while inflating, and stay within the tire and rim manufacturers’ stated limits. Stop if the bead rises unevenly, the tire bulges, or the rim tape appears to move.
If the tire won’t take air, first check the simple causes:
- Both beads may not be in the center channel.
- The valve core may still be installed when more airflow is needed.
- The tire may have a large gap at one section of the bead.
- The inflator connection may be leaking.
- The tire may not be compatible with the rim.
For a stubborn gap, remove air, reposition the bead into the center channel, and use a strap around the tire’s circumference to press the sidewalls toward the rim. A few wraps of a removable band can help close the gap. Remove the strap as soon as the bead begins to seat.
Don’t use flammable sprays or improvised ignition methods to seat a bicycle tire. They can damage components and create a serious fire risk.
Finish the seal and check for leaks
Once both beads appear evenly seated, inflate the tire to a moderate pressure within the tire and rim limits. Rotate and gently shake the wheel in several directions so sealant reaches the bead edges and the inside of the casing.
Inspect the entire circumference for bubbles, wet spots, or a bead line that sits lower in one area. A few small bubbles may stop as the sealant works, but a steady stream indicates a leak that needs attention.
If air escapes from the valve, remove and inspect the valve core and tighten it slightly. If the leak is at the rim, check the tape and valve base. If it comes through a small puncture in the tread, rotate the puncture to the bottom and give the sealant time to coat it.
Leave the wheel inflated for a while and check it again before riding. A tire that seats successfully but loses significant pressure while standing still still has an unresolved sealing problem.
Handle difficult cases without making them worse
A bead that remains stubborn after several attempts may indicate a poor rim-tire fit, an incorrect tire size, a damaged bead, or a rim tape problem. More force isn’t a reliable diagnosis. Remove the tire and inspect the system again.
If the tire is damaged on the road and you need to get home, installing a tube can be a sensible temporary solution. Remove or secure the tubeless valve, wipe away excess sealant, and check the inside of the tire carefully before fitting the tube. Treat the tire as a tubeless setup again only after the original damage and sealing issues have been properly assessed.
A clean replacement checklist
Before calling the job finished, confirm that:
- Old sealant has been contained and wiped from the rim and work area.
- The rim, bead, and rim tape are free of damage and debris.
- The valve core and valve nut are correctly installed.
- The bead line is even on both sides.
- The tire holds air without a continuing leak.
- The final pressure is appropriate for the tire, rim, rider, and conditions.
Take the wheel for a short, cautious test ride and recheck pressure afterward. If it stays sealed, record the tire model and installation date. That small maintenance note makes future replacement and troubleshooting much easier.
